How Conducting Advanced Research Can Change Your Life: 7 Scholar Success Case Studies
Key Points
Advanced research helps high school students show passion, discipline, and academic maturity, which strengthens their college applications.
Strong mentorship allowed each of these students to turn personal interests into rigorous academic work that stood out to top universities.
These research experiences often led to Ivy League acceptance letters.
These stories show that conducting meaningful research builds confidence, leadership, and real impact while helping students discover academic and career paths.
When a young scholar with big academic dreams is wondering how to get into Ivy League schools, or at least a top college or university, it’s not uncommon to become overwhelmed.[1] Getting into college is a long-term journey that requires reliable mentorship as high school students navigate standardized testing, AP or IB courses, and strategic planning of extracurricular activities, all aspects of a strong academic profile.
One of the best ways to gain admission into your dream school is to participate in advanced extracurricular research of a subject that’s relevant to what you want to study in college. By doing research as a high school student, you can demonstrate to admissions officers that you’re not only dedicated to and passionate about your interests, but you’re also disciplined and curious enough to commit weeks to advanced study outside of the classroom. The following case studies illustrate how conducting research before applying to college can lead to stellar results with the right guidance. These academic scholars stand out as shining examples of what’s possible for any Scholar Launch student.
Two Research Programs Lead to Ivy League Results
Student H used not one, but two research programs with us to build a truly standout academic profile.[2] Because he couldn’t find mentors at his school who supported his diverse interests (history, law, ethics, French, and social sciences), we paired him first with a practicing lawyer to explore legal and moral philosophy, culminating in a published paper. Then he expanded into history, French, and social science work with a professor specializing in African American and Francophone studies, even conducting the project in French and studying complex topics such as colonialism, identity, and social unrest.
Thanks to that dual research experience—combining rigorous scholarship, language skills, and genuine intellectual curiosity—Student H entered the college application season with a rich, multidimensional profile. He earned acceptances from top-tier schools, including Harvard and Columbia. His story shows how committed mentorship and sustained effort on research projects can transform a student’s aspirations into impressive, real-world outcomes.
How an Alumni Learned to Apply Computer Science in the Real World
When he first approached us, Student A already knew he was passionate about applied mathematics, AI, machine learning, and engineering. He just needed help turning that passion into real work.[3] With support from Scholar Launch and Leadership and Innovation Lab (LIL), he dove into serious research. Together with a professor from a top school, he not only built a machine-learning model using tools like Python and logistic regression, but also published his research in an academic journal.
But Student A didn’t stop there. After research, he spent months in the LIL entrepreneurship program, where he transformed his technical know-how into a real product: 3D models that help people with visual impairments. His project made a tangible difference by powering over 80 software applications for low-vision accessibility. Along the way, he sharpened his leadership, problem-solving, and time-management skills. In the end, his hard work and vision paid off: he earned admission to Stanford University.
High School Student Advocates for Teachers' Mental Health
Even before joining Scholar Launch, Student E cared deeply about mental health, especially the mental health of teachers. She helped start a nonprofit, launched a wellness club at her school, maintained excellent grades, and added a psychology column to the school newspaper, all before coming to us.
When she felt ready to make a bigger difference, we paired her with a Faculty Advisor (a former Yale Medical School professor) and a Teaching Assistant to guide her as she conducted her research. She studied public health, education policy, and psychology, interviewed local teachers about their experiences, and wrote a 20-page research paper calling for policies to support teacher mental health—a call to action aimed at her own community.
Because of her passion, empathy, and persistence, Student E not only completed the project but also earned a glowing recommendation and was invited to join her mentor’s research team. Her journey shows how a student’s genuine care, curiosity, and willingness to take initiative can turn heartfelt concern into meaningful action and real-world impact.
Social Studies, Hip Hop, and the Intersections of Pop Culture
This case study tells the story of Student S, a high schooler who transformed her love for social issues, gender studies, and pop culture into a powerful research journey and was admitted to schools like Harvard University, Stanford University, and Yale University as a result.
When no mentor at her public school could help her meaningfully combine those interests, we offered a solution by matching her with a professor specializing in social studies and comparative literature. Together, they crafted a research project that dove deep into the persistence of misogyny in hip hop lyrics. Student S analyzed lyrics, studied music theory, explored pop culture history, and ended up producing a paper titled "The Persistence of Misogynistic Lyrics in Modern Rap/Hip-Hop Music: A Comparative Analysis."[4] Her work didn’t stop on paper, either. She presented it at an international studies conference, earned strong letters of recommendation, and even became a state delegate for the U.S. Senate Youth Program.
More than grades and test scores, her journey shows how combining intellectual curiosity with creative interests can lead to deeply meaningful academic work and open doors at the most selective universities. For academic scholars who feel their passions don’t fit the “traditional” mold, her story stands out as a reminder: if you lean into what you care about and find the proper guidance, that authenticity can become your strongest asset.
International Student Conquers Uphill Battle and Earns Scholarship to Top U.S. School
Student V was a determined young man who grew up in Brazil and dreamed big, despite real obstacles. Before we stepped in, he’d already co-founded a nonprofit that worked to educate local youth and boasted impressive creative talents as a writer and artist. Still, he lacked the resources and opportunities to build an advanced research portfolio, and his first round of applications to U.S. schools was rejected. It would have been easy to give up, but he persisted, taking a gap year while continuing to work toward his goals.
Once he joined his Scholar Launch program, Student V was paired with a Faculty Advisor from a top university who helped him turn his passions for history, politics, and sociology into a serious research project. He went into his community, interviewed people, and documented systemic issues. Then he worked closely with his mentor, receiving lessons in academic writing to polish the paper. In the end, his resilience, curiosity, and hard work paid off: his research was published in a recognized journal for high school students, and he earned a generous scholarship to the New York University Tisch School of the Arts.
Student V’s story is a welcome reminder that success isn’t always the smoothest path. Sometimes it takes grit, a second chance, and the proper support. What started as a tough setback turned into a meaningful journey that opened real doors.
How a Young Scholar Became a Climate Advocate
From the very beginning, Student C, a high school student from Singapore, loved environmental science and sociology. However, she struggled to find a mentor who could support her ambitions. So, we worked together to transform her passion for the environment into a powerful research journey. We found a Faculty Advisor whose expertise in environmental sociology and political ecology aligned perfectly with her goals. With that guidance, she shaped her interests around climate change, climate justice, and environmental memory, and dove into serious research on grassroots environmental movements and ecological loss.
While conducting advanced research, Student C learned to write academically, select appropriate sources, and develop a sense of purpose for her ideas. She produced a full research paper, titled “Singapore’s Grassroots Environmental Movement: Modes of Representation in the Garden City,” earned a strong letter of recommendation, and turned her passion into acceptance letters from top universities across the U.S. and U.K.—including elite institutions like Yale University, Princeton University, and University of Oxford.
Her story shows how meaningful mentorship, genuine motivation, and hard work can help a student go from caring deeply about the planet to becoming a confident young climate advocate.
From Advanced Research to Wharton Business School
Student J turned a mix of community service, economics interest, and cultural curiosity into a serious, multi-part research journey. He then used his work to earn a spot at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
First, Student J worked with a faculty advisor on a project investigating financial literacy gaps in his local Hispanic community. Through learning how to use data analysis and regression modeling, he built a meaningful “real-world” project grounded in social justice and policy concerns. Then, in a second research program, he shifted his focus to macroeconomic theory, diving deep into economic policies and living standards in Mexico. He refined his hypothesis, gathered historical and economic data, and applied rigorous analysis as he developed his final paper.
What stands out most is that he didn’t just do research. He took what he learned and created something authentic: he published a paper, presented work at a research conference, and even launched an initiative to improve financial literacy among first-gen immigrants. His story shows how combining passion, mentorship, and perseverance can turn high school initiatives into robust evidence of maturity, grit, and real impact, qualities that helped him stand out in the admissions process to a top-tier business school.
Conducting advanced research is one of the most impactful after-school activities a high school student can participate in. Aside from how research can significantly enhance a college application, it also exposes young scholars to college-level subject areas not typically covered in the classroom. Research programs can also be an enlightening first step in students’ academic and professional careers by inviting them to explore the realities of their fields of interest before deciding on a college major.
